Ättestupa, the blood eagle, runes, using Hårga as a backdrop presumably because of the nearby Hårgaberget, etc, it just seems like a lot of different, random elements were thrown in just because it fits the aesthetic, and without much more thought than that. I think it's a good film but I'm annoyed at its location and how it uses it, essentially. As a sidenote, you could just google how to pronounce å and ä, you know ! You've got the same sounds in English.

They manipulated the events so that they could advance Christian and Dani to break up. This is what cults do in real life - destroy old relationships in order to get people in. This was made possible, because they are BOTH confused, both having their issues and lack of direction. But I'm amazed that people consider Dani, she took part in choosing a human sacrifice, when the morally / ethically choice would to refuse? It's a horror movie but people are pretty messed up if they don't see that. I don't think what Christian does can be called gaslighting - but he's still being quite spineless and manipulative, but more out of instinct rather than any plan. They create the environment where he feels like an outsider, and she feels like she belongs there. This is a point I haven't seen been mentioned often: when they make Dani choose the final sacrifice- in what condition is Christian? Unable to SAY ANYTHING. Dani is angry at him, justifiably, but at a man who the Hårgas have made paralyzed and unable to speak. And they want Dani to be freshly heartbroken, so he would pick Christian- because doing so, she is made accomplice to the killing. That's her TRUE FINAL RITE into the Hårgas. Not the fabricated theatre of May Queen crowning, but making her take active part in choosing sacrifices. In that moment, she's liberated, but also insane. Is Christian a shitty boyfriend? Yes. Should they break-up? Yes. Should Dani choose a sacrifice? No. She should have either picked the Hårga man or flat-out refuse to choose ANYONE as a sacrifice. People idolising Dani somehow seem to overlook this lol. You go girl, be held and find a new home, take part in human sacrifices! Is a new side shown out of Dani in the end? Yes, but it's partly because she's gone insane. The original script literally describes the smile as insane, as liberation that the insane only can feel. She has lost everything and she's made to choose a sacrifice- a sacrifice that she's also being manipulated into. And she is now in the control of the Hårgas after that. She's taken part into their murders. The suit made out of flowers is a perfect metaphor: they shower her with love, but wanting to imprison her. She's so overwhelmed with the flowers it's hard for her to move. They welcome her home, because as the only blond female of the group, she's the perfect baby making machine for their blood lines. A pregnant woman has more trouble to escape as well. And this is why I love this movie even more than Hereditary: it's even more psychological, doesn't require supernatural aspects- and it's core strength is at what is IMPLIED even more than what is actually shown. That is powerful. NEITHER Dani or Christian are innocent. Neither are they guilty. They are lost, confused pawns and neither find any true liberation in the end. One loses his life, one loses their soul, sanity and individuality. There's a chance she will adjust but that is left open. I think it's a perfect ending to a horror movie. The character that has lost the most, has also become part of something truly sinister.

Midsommar script. Midsommar comes to a peaceful resolution that is rarely seen in horror movies, where we know for a fact that Dani is safe from the evils that brought her down to begin with, death be damned. Because at the end of the day, what truly matters to her is finding the happiness she's been sorely missing. I respect the sheer effort and insight you put into your videos, but it's like we watched two totally different Midsommars. I can't think of a more incorrect take-away from this film than this. This film takes the viewer through some scenes with highly complicated instances of emotional expression. I didn't really know how to take the group moaning seriously at first but it later occured to me how resonant that would make those experiences which were being shown. Dani was offered an emotional breakthrough from the way the cultists helped her deal with her feelings. She needed that level of exertion, she had snapped. Furthermore, Christians disoriented infidelity is what provided Dani the chance to snap which lead to the cultists helping her exercise away her damaging emotions. I think this wailing scene also works to set up Dani to be portrayed as having emotionally transcended to the point where she is willing to let Christian die; she found the support she needed from Christian from the female cult members instead and so she feels no remorse in letting him die. He ultimately failed to help her directly of his own accord so karma worked to have him betray her badly enough to where she would snap and the cult would help her heal, leaving her only with feelings of resentment towards Christian and an invaluable feeling of gratitude towards the cult members that is strong enough to over rule that fact that they are all insane killers that killed everyone she came there with and even kill their own in ritualistic practice. The emotional logic of this story operates on a genius level that most people won't quickly associate with, but that doesn't make it nonsense.
